6000 year old earth

After watching this slideshow I thought that the scientist figured that the earth was older than 6000 years old because of the high mountains. They mountains usually take about a million years to be that tall and counting how many tall mountains there are they must have took about billions of years to grow

  1. How would early geologists known how long it took for mountains to get that tall?

  2. because every time a earthquake happens usually the nearest mountain can grow and a earthquake dosen't happen everyday so scientist should know that they take a long time and the fact that not all quakes happen in the same place
